Incomplete Answers Submission
This feature allows students to submit partially completed answers without losing their progress, even if they don’t know the full answer or run out of time. Let’s take a closer look at how it works.
This feature allows students to submit partially completed answers without losing their progress, even if they don’t know the full answer or run out of time.
Let’s take a closer look at how it works:
Session Settings
To test this feature, create a session with the following settings:
Partial points enabled
Reveal score
Reveal the solution after submission
Please join the session as a student to try it out.
Applicable Question Types
This feature mainly applies to three question types where answers can be incomplete:
Categorizer
Categorizer (checkboxes)
Fill in the gap
For all other question types, students can submit an answer as long as they select at least one option or type at least one character.
Submission Flow
Previously, students weren’t able to submit answers with empty rows. Now, once a student selects just one item, the Submit button becomes active.
If they click it, any unanswered rows will be highlighted, and a warning will appear. The button will then change to "Submit anyway."
At this point, students can either complete their answer or choose to submit it as-is. If they submit an incomplete answer:
You’ll see it on your dashboard as a regular answer.
Missed items will be marked with a red cross.
Scoring Logic
Categorizer (checkboxes)
The submission experience is similar. The evaluation formulas have been updated to handle partial answers fairly:
Missed rows receive 0 points.
Completed rows are evaluated using the standard formula.
Fill in the Gap
Empty gaps are clearly highlighted to help students identify what’s missing. If they submit an incomplete answer:
Only filled gaps are evaluated.
Empty gaps remain grey and are counted as incorrect in the evaluation formula.
Students receive points only for correct responses.
Updated Hand-In Process
We’ve improved the hand-in flow to help students avoid losing progress.
Students can now submit all draft answers in one click, or hand in the session without them.
Drafts are no longer discarded when handing in a session.
If a student unsubmits a session, all their drafts will be restored.
The Hand-In modal will vary depending on the student’s answer state:
No answers given
Some submitted answers + unanswered questions
Draft answers present
If a student has unsubmitted drafts, they’ll be asked whether to include them when handing in the session.
If they return to the answer view, any drafts will be highlighted in the sidebar and on the question page.
If a student chooses to hand in without submitting drafts:
The session will be handed in.
You’ll see checkmarks in your dashboard.
Students can still work on their drafts after unsubmission.
If a student chooses "Submit drafts", all valid answers — even if incomplete — will be submitted. You’ll see them immediately on your dashboard.
Timer Behavior with Incomplete Answers
If a session has a timer and the student doesn’t submit before time runs out:
All valid (including incomplete) answers will be auto-submitted.
The student will see a message that time is up, along with a button to hand in the session.
If there are any unanswered questions:
A warning will be shown.
The student can either hand in the session or return to their answers.
They may also request more time from the teacher to complete the remaining questions.
⚠️ Important:
If a student has an automatically submitted incomplete answer, and the teacher decides to extend time while "Allow only 1 attempt" is enabled, a warning will appear.
It will prompt the teacher to allow multiple attempts, or the student won’t be able to edit the previously submitted answer. This warning also appears when adjusting time via individual timer settings, if any selected students have auto-submitted incomplete answers.
